Looking After Yourself & Getting the Right Care

At [Your Practice Name], we want to help you get the right care at the right time. Many minor health problems can be managed at home or with help from your local pharmacy. This can save you time, and free up our GPs to see patients with more serious conditions.

Self-Care & Minor Ailments

Many common ailments can be treated at home with simple remedies or over-the-counter medicines. Typical minor conditions include:

  • Coughs and colds

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Back pain or sprains

  • Indigestion, heartburn, or constipation

  • Earache

  • Mild skin conditions such as eczema, acne, or athlete’s foot

  • Minor cuts and bruises

Medicine Cabinet Essentials:

  • Pain relief such as paracetamol

  • Mild laxatives and anti-diarrhoeal medicines

  • Rehydration solutions

  • Indigestion remedies

  • Basic wound care: plasters, cotton wool, dressings, elastic bandages

  • Thermometer and tweezers

Important reminders:

  • Keep medicines out of reach of children.

  • Always read labels and follow dosing instructions.

  • Check expiry dates and return unwanted/out-of-date medicines to your pharmacy.

  • Many infections, especially colds and sore throats, are caused by viruses and do not require antibiotics. Rest, fluids, and simple pain relief are usually enough.

Who to See & Where

Knowing where to go for help can make a big difference:

  • Pharmacy: Your local pharmacist can advise on minor ailments and over-the-counter medicines. They can also provide guidance on healthy living and lifestyle questions.

  • GP: If symptoms persist, worsen, or you’re unsure, contact your GP for advice or an appointment.

  • Minor Injuries Unit / Walk-In Centre: For minor injuries like sprains, cuts needing stitches, or burns.

  • NHS 111: For urgent health advice when you’re unsure who to contact.

  • A&E / 999: For life-threatening emergencies (see below).

When It’s Urgent / Emergency

Seek urgent help immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Loss of consciousness

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Sudden confusion or severe disorientation

  • Uncontrollable bleeding

  • Serious injury or major trauma

Call 999 for life-threatening emergencies. For urgent, but non-life-threatening concerns, contact NHS 111.

Home visits

Whilst we encourage our patients to come to the surgery, where we have the proper equipment and facilities available, we do appreciate this is not always possible. In this respect, if you do need a home visit, you can help us by calling reception before 10am. Please note that if you call later on in the day we may not have capasity to visit you at home.

You may only request a home visit if you are housebound or are too ill to visit the practice. Your GP will only visit you at home if they think that your medical condition requires it and will also decide how urgently a visit is needed. Please bear this in mind and be prepared to provide suitable details to enable the doctor to schedule house calls

You can also be visited at home by a community nurse if you are referred by your GP. You should also be visited at home by a health visitor if you have recently had a baby or if you are newly registered with a GP and have a child under five years.
